Easter Traditions

Easter is almost here! Easter is my favorite holiday because of the spring weather, new beginnings, the colors, and the traditions. Each year growing up I could count on the fun traditions, and as I grew older and now have my own house, I have added some of my own!

1.       The Broadway Market

The Broadway Market is a year long market in downtown Buffalo. I grew up about ½ hour south of Buffalo, and each year my mom and I would travel to the city to attend the special Easter Market. It was always the highlight of my spring and so much fun. All the freshest foods for Easter, Sweets, Hand Painted Eggs, and chocolate shops were there. It is basically a one stop shop for all your Holiday needs. Some really special things to get there are:

·         Polish Sausage

·         Butter Lamb

·         Pussy Willow (These can be dried out of water and used all spring!)

·         Horseradish Sauce

·         Polish Baked Goods

·         Easter Plants (Hyacinths are my favorite and can be planted out in your garden!)

·         Polish Wooden Easter Eggs (These are hand painted! I would get a new color each year)

2.       Grandma Carol’s Italian Easter Cookies

I always looked forward to Easter dinner at my grandma’s! She is Italian and is always making traditional baked goods, which I find fascinating. There is so much to be learned through food! Anyways, what makes these cookies special is that she would dye eggs and put the egg in the cookie, essentially making it look like the cookie is a basket holding the egg! They are so cute, and yummy. This year I tried my hand at making them myself. They were pretty easy and bake fast. The eggs do not need to be hard boiled, just dyed if you chose to go that route. You can also just make them as circle cookies and decorate with icing and sprinkles. Linked is the recipe that I used this year!

The Top photo are some of my grandma’s cookies! She does them the best :)

3.       Hot Cross Buns

So, this is my new tradition that I have added the past few years. I have a slight obsession with all things British (probably because of early exposure to the world of Harry Potter!). During the pandemic, I would watch British Baking videos on Instagram (Check out Bread Ahead if interested). I learned a lot about traditional British Bakes, which includes Hot Cross Buns. They are an Easter tradition, and I knew it was something I had to try my hand at. This recipe is a pretty straight forward bread recipe, with the inclusion of some spices and golden raisins. They are a great little bun to go with some Tea, and perfect for Easter morning.

My cross sort of melted onto the tops of the buns, but they tasted great, and are Kyle approved!

The Flower Stand will be open Friday and Saturday before Easter (4/7, 4/8) and you can pre-order your flowers right on our website. Be sure to stop by and grab some flowers, maybe this could be YOUR new Easter Tradition!
